Horror is one of the sharpest ways to make sense of the anxieties and absurdities of our modern age—and these two horror novels take aim at the aesthetics and expectations shaping modern femininity. In Trad Wife by Sarah Langan, a journalist profiles a trad wife influencer only to discover something far more sinister than staged videos and camera-ready smiles. In Until Death by Mary Berman, a writer’s scrolling on wedding forums has done little to prepare her for the nightmare of planning her own special day. These two authors will explore how Gothic horror can expose and skewer the systems, performances, and industries determined to keep women in their place.

This event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required, and seating is first come, first served. Signing to follow. Decatur Book Festival details here.

Book in a Year

Have you always wanted to write a novel? Do you have a dozen ideas for a book kicking around, but no idea where to start? Or perhaps you have a dozen drafts kicking around, but no idea how to finish?

Well, no more! This 2026, join Mary Berman, author of UNTIL DEATH (Mulholland Books, 2026), for a one-year soup-to-nuts novel-writing program. This class will start with brief lectures, assignments, and exercises to help you outline a new novel or define a roadmap for an existing draft. You'll draft your novel over the course of eight months, with monthly accountability check-ins and fixed-yet-flexible word count targets. Then, at the end of the year, you'll develop a plan to revise, self-publish, or query — and you'll celebrate your accomplishment!

Six-Week Fiction Workshop

Author Mary Berman returns to facilitate MetroWest’s workshop for those who are ready for serious critique in a safe environment!

In this class, students will study and practice the craft of fiction. Each week, we will examine and discuss some critical element of fiction – such as plot, character, or voice – before workshopping our own stories with the full group. Students are welcome to workshop short stories or novel excerpts. Each student will finish the class with at least one piece ready for meaningful revision and submission. This workshop is six 90-minute sessions.

Are YOU Ready for Workshop? (The Answer Is Probably Yes!)

New or early-career writers can often feel intimidated by the idea of workshop. But no fear: A MetroWest workshop merges moderated discussion with constructive critique, offering supportive energy, gentle accountability, and community.

In this free, one-hour virtual session, we’ll introduce the format of the MetroWest workshop; discuss the benefits of workshop; and offer participants the opportunity to “test” workshop, using a short story from the facilitator. You will come away from this one-hour session with an understanding of the whys and hows of workshop, and with the confidence and eagerness to start workshopping your own work.

Workshop: Submissions Tetris

Are you on the short story submissions grind? (Or in the query submission trenches?) This class will help you manage the calendar!

Writing a story is one thing. Playing submissions tetris – or matching your story to the array of submissions calls out there, many with clashing deadlines or themes – is quite another! In this workshop, we’ll build a spreadsheet that we can use when submitting stories to magazines and anthology calls; we’ll talk about how to weigh different submissions criteria, such as payment, response time, and prestige; and we’ll look at a variety of markets and discuss how best to prioritize submissions for your own fiction and career goals.
